Call for pesticides research
Help secure funds for a systematic review of the impact of pesticides on our most important pollinators.
A third of all the food we eat is pollinated by honeybees but nature’s number one pollinator is under threat and no one knows why.
The threat to bee populations and, in turn, the integrity of our food supplies is captured in the new feature film – Vanishing of the Bees. As the film outlines there are numerous theories as to why the honeybee population has declined so alarmingly in recent years, but we believe the role played by pesticides, and in particular, the use of neonicotinoids should be investigated urgently.
This family of chemicals has been linked to honeybee declines elsewhere in Europe and have been restricted in Germany, France, Italy and Slovenia. However, very little independent research into their effect on bees has been carried out in the UK.
That is why we are petitioning the UK Government, which earlier this year announced a £10m fund for pollinator research, to carry out a systematic review of the impact these pesticides are having on honeybees.
